When to claim a free point?

I cannot see that it matters when you do. If A has the option to claim an extra point he will never gain from not doing so - so until he does claim both A and B will play as if A really had one point more. Thus A can just start at 1-0, or play as if he had done so and eventually possibly claim the match at 1-away.
