Ladies Rule in San Antonio

It was a great weekend for the ladies at the 2017 Texas Backgammon Championships.

Leyla Zaloutskaya and Antoinette-Marie Williams (both from NYC) met in the Championship Division final with Antoinette winning a thrilling match with a doubled backgammon while trailing 3-away, 6-away. They were two of six ladies in the very strong 72 player field. In the recollection of many participants in San Antonio of long experience, it is believed this is the first time in the USA, and maybe in the world, where two women competed in a major championship final. Two women have previously competed in an Advanced/Intermediate final in the USA.

In the Advanced Division final, Elena Evans (of Austin) defeated Dan Morse (of Houston). There were 14 women in the Advanced field of 42. So, again, we may have had a first by ladies winning both the Championship and the Advanced Division championships. Patti Rubin won the Advanced Last Chance.

In the Limited Division final, Mary Kay Lively (Boerne, Texas) lost to Brad Vogt (also Boerne, Texas -- though they didn't know each other). Regan Lambeth (Sacramento, California) won the Consolation. There were 10 ladies in the Limited field of 23.

So, congrats to all. Hopefully, this will bring even more women into our great game.
