I agree about spectaculars. I scour the internet and YouTube everyday for any recently posted video recorded match with decent quality audio commentary from a knowledgeable player(s). I have greatly enjoyed matches posted involving Mochy, Falafel, Simborg, Stick, MCG, Neil Kaz; among others. This includes the decades old and professionally produced and commentated WSOB matches. I too would love backgammon popularity to reach even a small fraction of poker's. I think backgammon suffers too much like chess in this regard. Casual or passing players don't seem to understand a lot of the strategy and tactics to appreciate them. Even when someone as colorful and excited about the game as Falafel is commentating. It's almost as if the level for casual enjoyment is just beyond the average viewer's time and attention. I'm not sure if more basic commentary is a solution as there's not always time between rolls to cover this; not too mention it may bore more advanced players. Backgammon televised or streamed needs to find that sweet spot where it can prove interesting to a larger subset of the knowledge base of backgammon, including those new to backgammon. Televised poker drew tons of people who would have never found the game on their own. Poker IMO was also bolstered in the US by everyone's perception that it was an easy game to learn and a fun and exciting way to make money. That's not necessarily true, but I think it was the perception. Backgammon has a similar feeling; basic ruleset and an opportunity to win money. I think the issue with backgammon is both a popularity/marketing issue and lack of larger prize pools/sponsors. Otherwise what else is holding backgammon stagnant relative to poker?
