If you read the editorial in this thread from the 1990 Chicago Point, you will see that when they seeded the Michigan Summer Championships they still had random draws for byes. And I am not advocating otherwise...that would give the seeded players a clear, huge advantage. They have just as much chance for a bye as anyone else.

On that subject, I have always maintained that when master points are awarded, people should not get the benefit of a bye. Someone who wins a tournament by winning 6 matches should get more points than someone who wins 5 matches. Yes, there can be a bonus for winning, but also points for each win.
