Put the same checkers on a light background board and see the difference. This has nothing to do with checkers standing out against background or not. Dark background causes the camera to overexpose the picture. (This is caused by the way the auto-exposure algorithm works.) This results in more instances of orange checkers looking like white when the light hits them from a certain angle.
