Daft as a bush

The Sun is a UK newspaper which regularly makes small changes to common expressions to amuse its readers. For example, a headline in respect of the recent Oscars ceremony says Breast Supporting Actress. ("A-list stars take the plunge at the Oscars on the most raunchy red carpet ever.")
The headline Daft as a Bush is similarly a small change of the usual expression "daft as a brush". It refers to celebrities who participate in a popular TV programme about survival in the bush.
The same small change to the usual expression is made in the articles you cite about people whose name is Bush. I cannot say why Adams writes "daft as a bush".
People do not say "daft as a bush" and Smith and Jones would not say that.
