In Response To: Is XG violating GNUBG GPL? (Timothy Chow)

Thank you, Tim. This was most helpful in framing the issue for us laymen. I was having the same problems as Ben, trying to figure out what is really being said here and why.

While I believe I understand the reason that someone might have a concern relating to this issue, I do believe it is reasonable to raise a few questions:

1. Before making an accusation of any kind of wrong-doing, particularly in a public forum, I would think great care should be given to collecting proper data to justify such an accusation. I am not sure this has been the case given Tim's remarks;

2. Before making an accusation in public, and possibly hurting someone's (Xavier) reputation, shouldn't the accuser first take his concerns directly to the accused and present him with his thoughts and possible evidence and give him a chance to respond? Has this been done? (I often hear reports on television that a company has been suspected of X and the TV asked the company about it and got no response, or got such and such response. And sometimes when this is done, it kills the story because it is discovered that the accusation is completely without merit. That is fair before releasing something publicly negative about someone. Maybe the accused has direct evidence to prove that the claim is not valid or can explain the "coincidence" in other ways.)

3. If it is true that XG somehow is using some code embedded from other programs, why is that "bad?" Is it illegal or immoral if that is the case? I am not arguing that it is not bad, I am just asking the question as I don't know. From my standpoint, if XG does have some of the same flaws as GNU because it shares some some code, that might mean it also has some of the good things too. But the bottom line, to me, as a user of XG, is that I don't care as long as I have a good tool to help my game. And I don't think that anyone doubts that XG is a great tool at a very reasonable price.

4. Should Xavier be expected to step up and defend himself or offer proof against these claims? I think not, and I respect Xavier for not doing so. Obama should not have to prove he didn't do something Trump claims he did unless Trump can show his proof to back up his accusation, for example. If I say I have proof that Jerry is having an affair with his sister, Jerry should not have to prove he isn't unless I give him the proof behind my accusation. And as Tim pointed out in this post, the accusations put forward thus far are anecdotal and not part of a "systematically" generated set of data which would be a more unbiased approach to reaching conclusions, bad or good.
