I wrote my post on and off over a couple of days. After posting, I see that in the interim, Albert Steig found the same trivial count as I did for position 1, and Bob Koca found (or had found) a very similar (if not more elegant) count for position 2.

Sorry, I did not mean to steal your thunder, though I suppose it could be argued that you stole mine first. :)

I'm glad that more people seem to be picking up on the virtues of colorless counting.
