Proper backgame technique?

The following position came up in a game against gnubg. From this point on I hit his lone checker at every chance and was slowly moving my checkers out and around. All in an attempt to get gnu's last checker trapped and even possibly pull out the win. Gnubg marked all my hitting moves at this point as blunders (at 4 ply) and in this case recommended bar/20 15/9 which would then give gnu a decent chance at getting its last checker to safety and then start bearing off. Surely the hitting play is correct, right? I managed to successfully keep that last checker at bay for a long time but gnu finally rolled lucky and got the checker to safety. However, I did avoid getting gammoned. What am I missing here?

The score (after 0 games) is: gnubg 0, user 0 (match to 3 points)

Move number 76: user to play 65
