+1! We have been spoiled with backgammon this weekend :) Their broadcasting format has been one of the best I can remember.
- High definition & pretty stable stream up to 720p (and I prefer Youtube Live or Twitch over Ustream)
- Post game interviews with most contestants
- Expert play-by-play analysis from both Anchors (great job!) and a nice variation of knowledgeable guest speakers (Carter is my fave!)
- Reduced volume from the playing room so that you can hear the commentary clearly
- An XG feed to the commentary box from the live transcriber
- Live chat on the Youtube stream for audience participation
- Multiple cameras showing board with clock, commentary box and player-cam
- Intermission messages are displayed (with a cam on the playing table, so you can see they come back) when breaks are taken.
- Fast archiving of any matches you may have missed on the Youtube channel
- Good filenaming of past matches
- Advance notice of the broadcast schedule and planned fixtures
The only thing I think might be added is a live XG feed which is also displayed for the viewers. But I guess practically there is not enough screen real-estate for that. And it takes away some of the fun of the audience guessing the correct play. Maybe a separate XG feed with some deliberate delay?
It would be good if other organizations took note. I think the quality of the stream and social media updates have been reflected in their viewing figures and channel subs which are quite high for backgammon. Bravo!!
