GNU Backgammon commands - Voice control experiment

Thanks for your reply Axel. No worries about the terminology - it was interesting to learn how you have leveraged this functionality.

Personally, I sometimes got a little fed up with the hundreds of clicks required to complete a PC backgammon match so I looked for a way to reduce the physical exertion of mouse clicking :-P

Last year I was experimenting with the same interface at View > Panels > Command. I devised a rudimentary system to control certain actions in GNUBG with speech (through headset or in-built laptop mic)

For example, I say..

  • 'new game'
  • 'snapshot' to take a screenshot
  • 'double' or 'cube'
  • 'drop'
  • 'take'
  • 'show MET'
  • 'heatmap'
  • 'show gammon values'
  • 'show keith'
  • 'show thorp'
  • 'analyze'
  • 'show analysis'
  • 'add to database'
  • 'resign'
  • 'save'

and best of all.. 'roll' - which saves a heck of lot of clicks!

Unfortunately it does require some additional software, and is Windows 7 and up only (however, it is quite reasonably priced). I have been in discussion with the programmers as I thought this method of control might also be of use to vision-impaired bg players or people suffering from RSI.

I was hoping that there would be some way to voice control the actual moves by dictating the moves by point numbers, but there is a problem with the software implementation (which it seems they will not change). For example, perhaps we want to move from point "9" (as a digit) but the system will output "nine" (as a text word) instead which is not recognised by the GNUBG Command panel.

So, although it is no silver bullet, I have found the other commands above quite useful for rapid display and navigation to some of the cool but more 'hidden' features of GNUBG. I have been (slowly) working on adding a few more useful voice commands to the profile. I have exams at the moment but will share a download link to my custom voice command profile when it is a bit more complete.
