I know that it's bad practice to create a seed by using the date and time.

Because somebody could guess it? On the other hand, the process is transparent -- the seed is not based on an arbitrary set of numbers. And it helps guard against accidentally repeating the same set of random rolls.

But we're not creating a seed here, just an offset.

Actually, I would just include the date and time as part of the seed. MT will produce completely different random numbers with even a small change in the seed.

You could use a seed like "yy/mm/dd hh:mm:ss.sss aaaa bbbb", where aaaa is Player A's code and bbbb is Player B's code. Ignoring punctuation and spaces, that's 23 digits.

Then again, it does aid a potential hacker to know roughly what the offset is.

Sure, somebody could guess within a few seconds when the match started. Then they'd have to guess the opponent's secret code. And then they'd need access to a computer while they're playing so they could know what the upcoming rolls are. That might be possible with an assistant and earphones, etc., but there must be easier ways to than that to cheat!
