You face the challenge of getting your checkers out safely, but are not in immediate danger of crunching. Putting your opponent on the bar is an effective way of reducing counterplay. After 8/6 5/1* there is a nice diversification of numbers (covers and escaping numbers), and White's hitting ace would have been bad for you in any case.

All this said, it is easy to get this play wrong OTB, and I am not sure I would have got this one right OTB. I'd like to test Timothy's heuristic on some positions in the future.
