I think maybe what was a playful usage and a playful response is getting a little bogged down once we hit the dictionaries. I would just add that when I saw the subject line I assumed kids would be "children" -- not college kids. A person under 30 would never refer to college-age people as 'kids' --- so you need to know something extra about the writer to interpret 'kids' in this way. Everyone here knows Phil, so it's no big deal -- and I'm sure he would never use 'kids' on the official website -- or at least I hope not.
