Omigosh -- I'm so glad Ben pointed out that other people do that 'wrong focus' goof when transcribing. I just took my first try at doing three of the Novi matches for Mishy, and feel like I've got the hang of it pretty well.
I agree you can speed things up a little by not "picking up your dice" every time -- but I find that doing so guarantees I'm not in the Browser window!
You definitely need to have room on your screen for the browser playing the video and the XG window to play side-by-side. I don't mess with variable speeds, and suspect if I did I might wind up goofing up on 'focus' more often. I generally find I'm able to transcribe comfortably at the rate of play, while also gaining practice by thinking about the moves along with the players, which is part of my motivation. I usually go back on review and do a ++ eval on all checker errors, and also go ++ for all cube errors and decisions, and sometime I can do this while one player is taking a 'long think'.
Bearoffs go fast but I can usually keep up so long as people bear off pretty much the way I would -- I make obvious plays as/before I see players move, which means occasionally I have to go back, but it's not that often.
It's a fun process, and I'd encourage more folks to give it a try, particularly those who are looking for an additional study strategy. I think you become more engaged in each checker play when you are transcribing, as opposed to just clicking through a match.
