1. I don't think you can make a general assumption about playing better or worse on line, as it depends on the player.
2. I would generally think that top players play better live, because they care more about the game when they play live. They traveled a long way and there is a lot at stake and they really want to win. They might be more casual about on line play.
3. The pip count on line helps, but I don't believe it helps top players that much...it's is much more of an aide to lower level players who might have trouble with the count on a board. Top players don't make that many errors because of the count over a live board.
4. The elephant in the room is the subject of cheating. People do cheat on line. Maybe they put a position into xg, or maybe the look at a take point chart or match equity table....but we all know that clear cases of cheating have been proven and that many which have not been proven are highly suspect.
5. I have a particular perspective to share. At my club on tuesday nights, I play many matches where I play on a real board and record the match, and I also play many matches against my opponent where we play on xg on my computer, which is very similar to playing on line. I have not done a careful study, but there is little or no difference in my play on either. For me, it doesn't matter. I can't imagine that it is a big difference for most people who are experienced playing both live and on line.
