Comparable situation

Having taken off the last checker, or having thrown a roll that permits the remaining checkers to be borne off is simply a special case of a gin position. In chess, you don't have to realize that you have checkmated your opponent and say "checkmate" in order for you to win the game if your flag drops; you just have to have produced the "gin" position.

Under these rules, the game can end both with a gin position and with an expired clock. This rule simply breaks the ambiguity that otherwise exists regarding which way the game ended by saying that "gin" prevails over clock expiration.

This is not a significant divergence from the prior ABT clock rules which stated:

5.3 TIME EXPIRATION. A player who exhausts his reserve time before he can validly claim the match is declared the loser.
