I'm not contending that the USBGF should return the money; I don't know nearly enough to comment, and I'm not generally a fan of the principle that "dirty money" should be returned. But I do know that the argument that "we used that to buy the ABT, so it's Bill Davis's problem now" doesn't make sense to me. Presumably, any money donated to an organization is going to be spent for some purpose, and thus will no longer be in the organization's hands when the controversy arises, unless the situation developed very quickly after the donation. So the fact that someone else has the money now seems irrelevant, no matter how the USBGF currently values the asset it purchased.
You sometimes see political campaigns return donations. They don't say "We spent that money on some ad; it's the advertising agency's problem now." And I wouldn't expect political campaigns to act according to a higher moral standard than the USBGF! (Again, to be very clear, I'm not accusing the USBGF of being unethical here; I'm just responding to this individual argument, and to the apparent attempt to shift responsibility to Bill Davis.)
