Talking while thinking, is it ok?

This wouldn't bother me at all, but I can see how it might annoy others. I'd liken it to checker shuffling (which would be the first thing I'd ban!). If you can't mentally picture two checkers in a different place on the board, without having to physically move them back and forth from that position 483 times, should you really be playing something as complicated as backgammon? Same thing with talking out loud on your move "in order to help the thinking process". Most people will have done high school/uni exams....you weren't allowed to talk in them right?....did you go through the whole exam without thinking anything? hopefully not ;-)
