The USBGF

So I clicked on the financial statements...and I have what strikes me as a pretty obvious question (right after what do all these generic statements mean) is how come there is a $273 miscellaneous expense (line 6509) and that is almost $20 more than was spent on line 6010, which is marketing? The question is why the hell is only $255 being spent on marketing? The USBGF has absorbed the ABT; why are they not spending more money figuring out how to get new players?

This is not longer sideline quarterbacking. Any time an organization devotes most of their time to making rules, or figuring out rules, particularly in gaming, it really isn't looking to expand the game. It is seeking control. It is looking to rule. I have a almost unnatural aversion to that. So I will be doing the "think globally, act locally" campaign. I am going to figure out how to help Amy Trudeau with the Chicago club and help that grow. I am going to get younger people to start making social media with backgammon a thing. Try to make it fun, and about the fun. I am basically going to try to live up to the USBGF mission statement, since I don't see it being fulfilled by the federation.

We are what, 9 years in and have around 1500 members. We are a country of close to 323 million. Oh, and 35% of those members aren't even US players. That's insane. And sad. And, I would point out that as nice as the magazine is, it really isn't a good tool for marketing to anyone. No one except a very narrow selection of backgammon players would be interested. But I would love to see that change. I'm sure I will be fielding a lot of opinions at Ken Bame's tournament next weekend, and I look forward to speaking with anyone and everyone. Thanks for listening to me complain---Carter
