Other than what Rich has already said about the validity of voting with one's feet which I completely agree with and echo, I relish playing backgammon when it is enjoyable to me. You are comparing good backgammon players to pro level players in all these other games/sports. Even great players shouldn't be put into this comparison.
The bottom line difference for a backgammon player playing an Open level event and a pro anything that you listed is the pro gets well compensated when he shows up. The compensation for a backgammon player is the enjoyment of the tournament itself. If the risk is too high that I won't enjoy myself because of the rules I'm not going. I, like almost everyone I presume, attend tournaments all the time where I don't agree with some of the rules whether it be non clock preference, non legal move preference, the tournament format itself, whatever ... but there's a tipping point and a tipping rule where the value of the tournament diminishes me spending my money to go there. Whenever you or someone else wants to compensate me nicely for attending a tournament regardless of rules I'll be there with bells on.
