I'm guessing most people don't understand a professional tennis players schedule, esp. an elite player like you suggested. The non elite tennis players certainly aren't rolling in the money. This link is a little dated (2011) so some details maybe have changed but you get the idea.

ATP tennis schedule

For top 30 players you see they don't have a lot of choice in the matter. Their lives are spelled out by the ATP. You may get a choice of this one or that one on rare occasions but with so many of the tournaments being must plays the rest of the schedule sort of falls in to place. Depending on the when/why a player does not make a tournament there may be fines involved and it still can count against you points wise for your ranking.

I also don't think think that tennis players outside of the very elite make as much money as you think they do.
