While Mary is one of the nicest people in the game:

Sometimes Mary forgets to wear her glasses and she might have thought you were 1800.

or....

Mary lives on a farm and one of her pigs might have nudged her arm and she accidentally accepted your invitation.

or....

Every now and then Mary likes to play someone much worse than her as it helps her ego.

or....

Mary is working on a new book to help beginners, and she is doing research.

or.....and this is my favorite:

I have often suspected that Mary is not human at all--her skills are too great and her patience and kindness are more than a human backgammon player is likely to to have. So you were really playing a bot.
