Major split invites action on a field with all enemy guns loaded, but it is the enemy field. In backgammon his casualties cost more.

The minor split is a semi-lookaway. Just postpones the onslaught, but permits him to either hit (7 numbers) or continue priming or attack - lets him keep many plans. the first is better because it commits him to a skirmish with a temporarily inferior board.

I liked Mary's move before I read it here, and checked XG, but did not comment, to keep discussion fresh. In short - look away! Do not commit! Do not face a football team in front of you. Mind your own business! Get your own guns ready!
