BG Buddy and Illegal Moves

There are two questions here: 1) what is the ruling, and 2) what should the rule be?

The answer to No. 1 depends on how the UKBGF Rules are written, and if they are not written clearly, then the TD is called to determine what he believes is most fair.

The answer to No. 2 is subjective...it depends on what each person believes should be the rule, and this is why any tournament should have clearly written rules that explain what the ruling is.

In my personal opinion (and in our chouette rules in chicago), we do play Legal Moves. If a player makes an illegal move and you catch it right away, it is played legally. If the other player rolls and then it is discovered, the roll does not count. The move is made legally and the other player rolls over.

If the second player rolls, moves, and picks up his dice (or ends his turn) and then the previous illegal move is noticed, THEN it is too late to correct it.

I believe the above is the fairest way to handle it, but again, it is up to the ruling bodies to determine.

Yes, sometimes this approach causes some grief, and yes, there is an opportunity to cheat. Let's say my opponent, Tom, plays illegally and I don't notice it (or if I am a cheater, I pretend not to), and I roll. And I roll a great number and just keep my mouth shut...or, if I roll a bad number then I say, oh, doesn't count, you moved illegally.

Conversely the player who made an illegal move, if he is dishonest, can use the same ploy...waiting to see what his opponent rolls before deciding to mention his illegal move.

So if people are dishonest and cheaters, they can use legal moves to cheat. Of course, if people are cheaters they can find a way to cheat no matter what the rules are, so many of us believe you should write the rules assuming people are honest, and once you find that a player is not honest, you kick him out of your tournament or at the least, assign a monitor to his matches and/or warn his opponents.
