It is completely inconsistent , and moving the checkers and putting them back often results in problems. So why haven't we changed?

1. The game is ruled by old folks like me who generally fight any change.

2. The recommended alternative is "touch-move." That is a draconian alternative that we all reject because we are all used to touching the checkers. But that is NOT the only alternative.

A reasonable alternative is "move-move." Touch the checket all you want but once you move it, it stays.

I think we could all get used to this reasonable alternative in no time.

With this rule if I am thinking about moving 32 I can simply offset the two checkers I am thinking about moving, leaving them on the points, and I should be able to easily visualize the end position. Then lets say I decide the 3 is for sure, I can move the 3 and decide on the two, but I can never move the three back.

I believe this rule would solve many problems. Even honest and careful players sometimes get mixed up and put the checkers back wrong. I cannot tell you how disturbing it is to me to have to sit there and watch my opponent keep moving checkers back and forth trying to make sure he puts them back in the right place and then worring about how I can prove to him what the starting position was after he screws it up! We shouldn't have this kind of added stress and problem.

But again, people who make the rules and the top players, most of whom have played for many years, resist change even if it is a clear improvement. But change can happen if enough of us express our opinions and this forum happens to be one of the best places to do that IN SPITE of a few assholes who like to attack people and argue against the person instead of the idea.
