I don't quite understand this problem. Imo in both cases he should economize by playing all the roll from within the board. Regardless, If you are asking in which of the 2 positions making the 3pt is a bigger mistake, I'd say at the position where the opponent has so many checkers at her mid, and so much race deficit. Race deficit means more winning chances for the opponent so doing a mistake costs more than say when the game is 50-50
