First, Garry is a first time tournament director and has done something great for backgammon with the Montreal Open.
I am not even there, and I am going to post a criticism here. This is one of my pet peeves. With a 32 bracket, 2 cashing in the main and 2 cashing in the consolation, one can set up the consolation bracket to be perfect with every player in the same round having the same win/loss record. With 24 to 31 players, there are byes, but the +/- on W-L record should be no greater than 1 for players in the same round. Montreal seems to have used one of those awful bracketsdotcom brackets as its model. John Klein is in the semifinal of the consolation with a 2-1 record. John could cash with a 3-2 overall record. According to the latest update I've seen, Rich M., Julius H., Roberto L., Narvey G., Karen D., and Michael N. would need a 5-1 record to reach the consolation semifinal. To me, this is very unfair and easily avoidable.
Even with this criticism, I give major kudos to Garry and Ross for putting on the Montreal event. It is a ton of work and great for backgammon.
