Seems like there are two things at work here. A stronger board means that if Neil hits a shot his winning chances increase vs a weaker board, and the ugly stack on the five point makes the bear-off less efficient vs the nearly "speed board" in the first variant.

Any opinions on how much each factor weighs? I'm not seeing a lot of hits for Neil (he gets a shot if the herd shakes a 61 or 62 and he still has a checker in the outfield) and I'm not seeing that he's all that much better with a man on the roof vs just breaking contact, so presumably it's about race efficiency? Or not?
