This backgammon meaning of the hidden layer is likely impossible to know.

I was recently fascinated by this video about neural net image manipulation. At around 2:10, Miles says: "so we can see that movements in the latent space have meaning in human-understandable aspects" I take that to mean that the hidden layer - probably depending on the specifics of the NN design - does, to some extent, encode what humans would call concepts. Still far away from explaining anything, but maybe a first step on the way. Of course, I may have totally misunderstood.
