As I seldom actually play backgammon my approach to problems is not dissimilar to solving a crossword. Should my wife fail to complete a cryptic one its handed to me to complete. There are plenty of bits filled in all the hard work has been done. I check the game status 50/50 , I check the match status 50/50 and look for candidates. We are given 8/2* 6/1* and 22/11. The great man said if you can do good things both sides of the board give it credence. I like 22/16 6/1* it suits my belt and braces style.

On analysing with XG who nearly had an orgasm on 22/16 6/1* or was it me, the crux of the problem is obvious. Its all about gammon potential. I have no idea how to calculate that, probably the reason that I did not take it into account. Maybe theres a simple ROT !!

In such positions as this middle game the best technical play guarantees nothing. Play what your comfortable with.
