If you make the 3 now you can start jumping checkers in the outfield next turn without unfinished business at the offensive side of the board, while after 8/4 the blot on the 8 remains a liability. Also, after making the 3, you are not happy with the gap on the 4, but you still have 5 out of 6 blocking points and White is not yet at the edge of the prime.
