I will guess there are thousands in the Boston area who know how to play backgammon so the 1/2 is high. Increasing what you call breadth of interest is way more important than the engagement. Get 10% of them and you have hundreds of new players to the club. Get 10% of those who had showed up before but were not engaged and you get 3 more players per event.
