THOMAS TENLAND OF SWEDEN IS AWARDED THE TITLE OF GRANDMASTER (CLASS 2) WITH AGGREGATE PR OF 3.28 (8TH RANKED ON INTERNATIONAL PR LIST)

To: Mr Thomas Tenland,

Award of Grandmaster (Class 2) Title

I have the pleasure of informing you that your performances from your recorded matches at the international backgammon tournaments in Portugal, Iceland, Cyprus and Croatia in 2017 have satisfied BMAB’s threshold PR and experience criteria for the award of the title of Grandmaster (Class 2). Congratulations on this very notable achievement. This is a lifetime award which can never be degraded, but may be improved upon through continued improved performance.

Yours sincerely,

Rick Janowski (BMAB Executive Director)

Thomas has provided the following excellent mini-biography which tells the story of his rapid success towards the top of our game:

Thomas Tenland, born in 1983, started playing backgammon on FIBS in the summer of 2012. He quickly got hooked, and ever since, he has been a true enthusiast.

Thomas takes greatest pleasure in increasing his understanding of the game and finding a flow state while playing; "being in the zone".

Only four years into his backgammon career, he became the first Swedish grandmaster. Books, videos, articles, forums, discussions, lectures and lessons all definitely contributed strongly to his fast progress - but his toughest critic and dear friend XG has been the very biggest help.

Based in his home city Malmö, just across the bridge from Copenhagen, Thomas plays most of his backgammon in Denmark. In early 2016, he was the top scorer (i.e. won the most matches) in the Elite Division of the Danish Team Tournament. A month later, he finished tied for first in The 5th Backgammon Proficiency Test.

Thomas made his XG Masters debut in the summer of 2016, and was the only player to make the XGM semis in both 2016 and 2017.

In 2017, he represented the World Team at the Nordic Open. The closest he has come to a great victory so far, is reaching the undefeated semis at the Merit Open in Cyprus, in November 2017. Thomas built on this success a month later, winning the Mochy Quiz in Dubrovnik with a perfect score of 12/12.
