SEBASTIAN WILKINSON (UK) AWARDED THE TITLE OF GRANDMASTER (CLASS 3)

I have the greatest pleasure in announcing that Sebastian Wilkinson, of the UK, has been awarded the prestigious title of Grandmaster (Class 3), following his devastatingly brilliant performance at the recent BMAB Ranking Tournament at Long-Eaton, UK. He aggregated an astonishing PR score of 2.72 in the two-day event comprising six 11-point matches. This score is the greatest achieved over 2-day event by a clear margin. Full details of the tournament results including excellent performances by many of the participants will be reported separately soon.

Sebastian now joins 37 other Grandmasters already installed within BMAB. He is the third British player to obtain this prestigious title, joining both Julian Fetterlein and Gaz Owen. Included below you will find his mini-biography, which covers his background and notable achievements.

Kudos and congratulations to Sebastian Wilkinson for his brilliantly inspiring achievement.

MINI-BIOGRAPHY

Born in Cambridge UK in 1990, Sebastian Wilkinson started playing backgammon in Mallorca while studying at the University in Palma. His first backgammon tournament was the World Championships in Monte Carlo 2014 where he won the Doubles World title with Jacek Wojciechowski. Since leaving University Sebastian has played and taught backgammon full time.

He has represented the UK in online and international tournaments and was part of the "World Cup" winning team in Georgia 2016 and part of the runners-up team at the European Championships in Helsingor 2016. He also won the inaugural and prestigious UK tour in 2016, which included winning both the Bristol and Manchester open events.

In 2017 with the support of the UKBGF, Sebastian together with UK Grandmaster Julian Fetterlein launched “Backgammon Workshop” (bgws.co.uk). This partnership provides a tuition service for players looking to improve their game to a high level. Its students have had great success and big tournament wins.

Sebastian has been a regular participant in the BMAB tournaments in the UK since his first event in summer 2015. Right from the start he has had consistently high performances often cashing in both the win-based and PR-based pools. He very quickly gained the title of Master (Class 1). In the tournament in December 2017, he achieved the remarkable PR of 2.72. This constitutes the best ever performance at an international 2-day BMAB event by a very clear margin.

Sebastian enjoys teaching, travelling and playing guitar and can often be found at Gridgammon playing online under the nickname of “Pyrrhic”.
