Byes in a Swiss

One “interesting” aspect of Swiss Tournaments is that you can have late round byes which can be a huge equity swing.

David Levy made an interesting suggestion regarding byes. He suggested that the person getting the bye get the win counted toward advancing but not toward the money pool. That is, if two players cash with the same record but one got a bye and the other did not, the person not receiving the bye gets more money.

An interesting variation is to award a half point for byes in their cashing total. Someone with a record of 3-3 going into round 7 and gets a bye their record would be 4-3 but their cashing total would be 3.5 – 3. This would put them behind the people with the same record but ahead of people with one less win. This seems logical because the average win/lose expectation is 50-50.

An interesting variation is to award full wins for advancing but add a fraction of 100 minus the round number to the cashing total. This is in the belief that byes become more valuable later in the tournament.

Example, if someone had a record of 3 wins and 3 loses (3-3) going into round 7 and gets a bye their record would be 4-3 but their cashing total would be 3.93 – 3.

If someone with a record of 6-3 gets a bye in round 10 their record would be 7-3 but their cashing record would be 6.90 – 3.
