Is Bacgammon dead?

I suspect backgammon will survive for centuries yet despite the advent of online games such as Fortnite. Long after Fortnite has passed beyond human consciousness (online games have a very short half-life) backgammon will still be being played.
It is the oldest game in world at 5,000 years, outdistancing Go (2,400 years) and the fledgling chess (1,600 years). There are many reasons for its longevity but key amongst them is the adrenaline rush created by outrageous swings of fortune. That is true of very few games and over the years the balance of skill and luck has created the perfect board game.
Football (soccer) is so popular precisely because it creates 5 or 10 adrenaline minutes every game (goals plus contentious decisions) and that is over 90 minutes. You get much better value for money playing backgammon!
To quote George Bernard Shaw: "You don't stop playing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop playing." So, play on!
