Part 1: The 16 letters displayed above anagram into what famous backgammon player (including middle name)?

Part 2: A "move" consists of either (a) lifting a letter and inserting it between two other letters, or (b) switching two letters. What is the minimum number of moves required to transition from the order of letters shown above to the order of letters in that famous backgammon player's name?

(For example, for the first move you might switch the V and G, getting PULL AGID VAME RAID. Or you might lift the M and insert into say third position, to get PUMLL AVID GAE RAID. Spaces are irrelevant -- you just need to work towards the proper order.)
