How does GNU calculate the "live cube take point'?

This question came up on the GNU Backgammon mailing list a few days ago, but hasn't received a satisfactory answer yet. How exactly does GNU calculate the "live cube take point"?

The GNU Backgammon Manual gives the following formula.

TP(live, n Cube)=TP(effective, n cube) * (1 - TP(live, 2n cube))

However, this formula is not completely clear. What exactly does "effective" mean? Experimentation indicates that the live cube take point calculation takes into account the percentage of gammon wins by each player, but it is not clear exactly how the gammons are taken into account, especially for match play.
