In the U.S., winnings from gambling are taxable income whether or not you're a professional gambler.

More to the point, perhaps, is that the standard income tax form that everyone fills out every year has a blank where you're supposed to put your occupation. There might be a few occupations with special tax provisions, but for most people, what you put down here doesn't really matter. You could put down "armpit sniffer" and it wouldn't affect anything else on your tax return, and the government wouldn't bother to check. But you're supposed to put down something.
