In 1977 an entrepreneur named Jules Klar planned a $ 1.000.000 amateur tournament but this did no take place. However, soon afterwards Henry Watts planned a "Million Dollar Amateur Backgammon Championship"in 1978, which became the Plimpton Cup - "named after the great all-time amateur George Plimpton" (as one could read in the flyer for the 5th Plimpton Cup held in 1981).
About George Plimpton, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Plimpton.
I have added a line in this article concerning backgammon.
When was the the last Plimpton cup?
