The Magriel safe/bold criteria mostly suggest bold (you have an anchor...
Interesting. I've always remembered the safe v bold criteria as alluding to an advanced anchor. Does the ace point count as an "anchor" here?
So, I dusted off my aging copy of "Backgammon" and re-read the chapter on safe vs bold. In the body of the text he only talks about having "an anchor" and that by having an anchor you can't be closed out so you can play more boldly. Then, in the summary at the end of the chapter he only mentions having an advanced anchor as part of the criteria. So, I was not mis-remembering the criteria.
Of course, Magriel did not come down from the mountain carrying stone tablets engraved by God that are a dispositive authority on the game. So, the short answer is that holding the ace or deuce point "anchor" offers more opportunities for bold play than no anchor, but an advanced anchor offers even more opportunities.
