automatic restart of computer and rollouts

I had a long gnubg rollout in progress and this morning my computer tells me there was some update which required an automatic restart. And now my rollout seems to be gone. Fuck.

What should I have done differently? Is there a way to tell the computer not to do that? Probably there is a way I could have saved the progress so far, but I don't know how. I usually do rollouts from the hints window which I hear is not smart but I don't understand why.
