Flying with backgammon boards

This is a question for those of you who have real nice boards, like Taki boards, and fly to tournaments with your set.

Do you carry your board with you on board or do you pack it in your checked luggage?

I'd worry about loss, damage or theft if it was in checked luggage. But with carry-on, a lot of aircraft have cramped overhead storage and stuff really gets banged around in there. And the option of stowing it under the seat scares me too- there's a lot of metal down there! Not to mention dirt, debris and spills.

Do you wrap it in some sort of protective covering?

This inquiry comes from someone who has flown a lot over the years, but never for a BG tournament.
