52 as opening roll and as response to 65.

For opening roll splitting is better than down with 52 by about .013 But after opponent has opened 65 run, 52 down is better by about .015. My instinct is that after the 65R covering the outfield is of greater importance and that splitting would still be correct and by a larger margin. What is going on here?
