Opening reply 44 question

I believe that the best reply to an opening 43D with 44 is B [24-20(2), 13-9(2)] for money. And, I believe that against 54D it is 24-16*, 13-9(2) [I don't know the Nactation for this]. Please correct me if either of these are wrong.

It's not immediately apparent to me why these moves would play differently. The only thought I have is that it might relate to the greater number of return shots after 43D. If anyone has any insights on this, it would be appreciated.
