Clock Petition

Posted By: Coolrey
Date: Thursday, 23 October 2008, at 4:26 p.m.

Given that there are two major ABT events left in 2008, and that the pimple that is developing on the ass of backgammon that is time delays due to slow play has come to a head...

We the players do hereby propose: {rough draft, ammendments solicited}

A switch to clocks mandatory tournaments in the Open division of future ABT evetns. We feel strongly that the current conditions and regulations in regards to clocking matches tend to unfairly punish the innocent victims of habitually slow players.

We believe that clocking all matches will penalize those responsible for any delays, which is more fair. Clocks allowed/mandatory/available whatever terminology deemed appropriate will be good for backgammon in general and promote participation and the popularity of the game. Clocks mandatory will cause consternation and be controversial for some, but we, (the experienced and the all knowing), believe strongly that these will merely constitute "growing pains" and not terminal cancer.

Once instituted clocks will become an accpted part of Backgammon as they have become in chess.

In addition they will eliminate the cause of many current squabbles encountered when two sets of dice are employed. Specifically arguments about quick rolling, what the dice roll actually was, and when someone has finished his or her turn.

We believe further that the institution of clocks for all matches will simplify the current rules and regulations of the World Backgammon Association or whatever name the current established governing body is, I forget!

Clocks will provide a much more professional atmosphere to ABT events and players in lower divisions will aspire to join the ranks of the "pros" or Open division, where they too will be allowed to use clocks!

We, the undersigned, do dutifully submit this petition for the due consideration of the directors of all ABT events, and the creator of the American Backgammon Tour Mr. Bill Davis.

It is our fervent hope that all Open division ABT events will be played with a clock beginning in the year 2009.

Respectfully submitted:

Stick, Neil, Ray, MCG, UBK, Bill Riles... etc, etc, etc.

Since LA and Vegas are two big events, the rumor has started about this "uprising", and most if not all affected parties will attend one or both of those events... It will give directors time to consider the upcoming controversy. It will provide us all time to ammend the text of the petition before circulating it. It will give directors time to consider their reactions to it, especially since Charlotte is EARLY in the 2009 ABT season and they will have clocks allowed or whatever so directors may also OBSERVE the new approach either directly or vicariously.

Please feel free to weigh in with your opinion, or to suggest alterations to the text of the "document". I think this would be preferrable to a forum or meeting discussed in previous threads here. Perhaps there should still be a meeting in the Backgammon Suite in Vegas, and the topic could be the petition or the committee could revise the petition. Whatever works, it's just an idea.
