I hit.

You gain in the race (obviously), take away an opp builder, get a checker headed for home. You may end up with three checkers back but that is usually survivable.

If you cover the barpoint you have a better prime (but still not as good of a board), not much threat (I wouldn't split the back checkers), and you are a bit behind in the race (5 pips).

Sometimes it's worth protecting an edge by shunning a hit. Here I don't see an edge to protect.
