Defending against a Backgame

The score (after 0 games) is: Gnu 0, Peter 0
I instinctively played 31: 10/9 4/1, but that wasn't best. Ploughing through the immediate shots now versus the shots I would leave after Gnu's play, I can see why. I would never get this right over the board. Anybody got any tips as to how to tackle this sort of position in live play?
Gnu 156
