Modified swiss

I tried Monrad, I tried double elimination. Both seem unsuitable for backgammon tournaments imo, the problem being : for players who lose quickly, they have to play too many meaningless matches.
In Monrad : Why keep playing if you lose your first couple of matches when you have basically no chance to place?
In DE : Why keep playing if you lose the first match when you have to win 8 or 10 matches in a row to win the tournament?
I've heard Neil advocating something he calls modified swiss, can i get som detail on how this works?
